Querida lectora o lector,<\/p>\n

Cuando alguien dice: “¿Me podría traducir lo que este señor está diciendo?” se le entiende. Pero, en realidad, el verbo debería ser “interpretar”.<\/p>\n

El traductor convierte el sentido de un texto de la lengua en que está escrito o impreso, a otra lengua; el intérprete hace algo equivalente—pero para nada idéntico—con el lenguaje hablado.<\/p>\n

“Traducir” proviene del latín: trans-<\/em> (de un lado a otro) yducere<\/em> (guiar); translate, <\/em>en inglés, tiene  otro origen latín, <\/em>con latus <\/em>(portado, llevado), el mismo origen de “trasladar”.<\/p>\n

La raíz de “interpretar” es muy otra: inter<\/em> (entre) y pret<\/em>(negocio, precio), es decir, un intermediario. Dato curioso: la correcta traducción al inglés de esta “interpretación” es interpreting,<\/em> porque interpretation <\/em>tiene demasiados otros significados.<\/p>\n

Traductor e intérprete: dos oficios, y no todo profesional del uno puede hacer bien el otro. Algunas diferencias:<\/p>\n

* La traducción usualmente es unidireccional (a la lengua nativa del traductor), solitaria e intelectual-cognitiva; lleva mucho tiempo pero no se realiza “en tiempo real”.<\/p>\n

* La interpretación va en ambas direcciones, es inherentemente social o pública, es intuitiva más que conscientemente cognitiva, debe hacerse de modo casi instantáneo y siguiendo el fluir del lenguaje hablado: una especie de “performance”.<\/p>\n

Ambas son difíciles y requieren de gran conocimiento, experiencia, sutileza y juicio.<\/p>\n

Con respecto a su relación con el tiempo, el traductor es un poco como un pintor o escultor, el intérprete más como un bailarín o actor.<\/p>\n
