It is a jewel. Beautiful\u2026 but painful. Composed by C\u00e9sar Calvo, sung in the bell-like tones of Susana Baca, leading exponent of Peru\u2019s Afro musical traditions: \u201cMar\u00eda Land\u00f3\u201d is a hypnotic chant evoking the back-breaking, mind-numbing, and most of all soul-deadening work that is the title character\u2019s lot in life. And still that of most of our kind, humankind.<\/p>\n<p>After singing of dawn breaking with its wings of light over the city\u2026 and noon with its golden bell of water\u2026 and night with its long goblet lifted to the moon\u2026 the lyric turns to Mar\u00eda \u201cwho has no time to lift her eyes, her eyes wracked by lack of sleep, by sorrows\u2026 Mar\u00eda who has no dawn, no noon or night\u2026 For Mar\u00eda there is only labor, only labor and more labor\u2026 <em>y su trabajo es ajeno: <\/em>her labor is not her own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What power, what violence, what understanding of the world is compressed into that single word <em>ajeno<\/em> \u201cbelonging to another or others, alien, foreign, unfamiliar.\u201d Its root, Lat. <em>alienus<\/em>, also yields Engl. \u201calien.\u201d (Think of how the latter word is applied to immigrants.)<\/p>\n<p>Argentina\u2019s incomparable troubador Atahualpa Yupanqui sang of the exhausted herdsman driving cattle in the hills: <em>\u201cLas penas y las vaquitas\/ se van por la misma senda.\/ Las penas son de nosotros,\/ las vaquitas son ajenas\u201d <\/em>(Sorrows and cattle\/ moving along the same trail\/ The sorrows are our own,\/ the cattle belong to another).<\/p>\n<p>The Roman playwright Terence gave us this moving expression of compassion, of solidarity with all our fellow mortals: <em>Homo sum, nihil humani me alienum est<\/em>\u2014I am human, and nothing that is human is alien to me.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a1Buenas palabras!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Pablo<\/p>\n<p><em>Pablo J.
