{"id":707,"date":"2016-12-18T14:19:54","date_gmt":"2016-12-18T20:19:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/interfluency.com\/?p=707"},"modified":"2021-02-21T17:28:00","modified_gmt":"2021-02-21T23:28:00","slug":"a-case-of-falling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/interfluency.com\/en\/2016\/12\/18\/a-case-of-falling\/","title":{"rendered":"A case of falling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/interfluency.wordpress.com\/2016\/12\/18\/el-caso-de-la-caida\/\">Enlace para espa\u00f1ol\/Click here for Spanish<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dear reader,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat goes up, must come down.\u201d How often do we reflect on the profound wisdom contained in the six words of that hackneyed phrase (five in Spanish: <em>Todo lo que sube, baja<\/em>)?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1712\" src=\"https:\/\/interfluency.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/12\/cac3adda-fall-sign-cartel-peligro-danger.png?w=244&amp;h=300\" alt=\"caida-fall-sign-cartel-peligro-danger\" width=\"244\" height=\"300\">It turns out this most simple physical act\u2014if indeed we can call what gravity does the \u201cact\u201d of the body that falls\u2014permeates language in deep and unexpected ways.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChance\u201d expresses luck, probability, risk, randomness, opportunity. It comes to us via French from Latin: <em>cadentia <\/em>was Vulgar Latin for \u201cfalling,\u201d from the Latin verb <em>cadere <\/em>(Span. <em>caer<\/em>). We hear the <em>cad- <\/em>root in \u201ccadence,\u201d the rhythm or pulse of music, as with a walking or running pace, but also the way a musical composition or section resolves\u2014how it \u201cfalls.\u201d The same root yields \u201cdecadence\u201d (Sp. <em>decadencia<\/em>) and \u201cdecay\u201d (Sp. <em>decaimiento <\/em>is \u201ca weakened or discouraged state\u201d; in the sense of the breakdown or rotting of matter, the Spanish word would be <em>descomposici\u00f3n<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><em>Cadere<\/em>\u2019s participle form, <em>casus<\/em> (like \u201csee\u201d has the participle form \u201cseen\u201d), gives us \u201ccase\u201d&nbsp; (Span. <em>caso<\/em>), whose main sense is a situation requiring investigation and action (such as treatment in the medical realm, prosecution or defense in the legal). Span. <em>acaso <\/em>means \u201cmaybe, by chance.\u201d <em>Casus <\/em>also gives \u201ccasual\u201d for \u201cunplanned, informal\u201d (Spanish emphasizes randomness: <em>casualmente <\/em>is \u201cby chance\u201d). Another descendant of Lat. <em>casus<\/em>: war\u2019s \u201ccasualties\u201d for \u201ckilled and wounded,\u201d though sometimes the term is understood to mean only those killed. More poetically, the casualties of war are expressed as \u201cthe fallen\u201d\u2014though, oddly, that phrase with its tone of nobility is generally not applied to civilian dead and wounded, who in most wars are more numerous.<\/p>\n<p>That which happens to us, a bit archaically, \u201cbefalls\u201d us. But this sense is alive and well in the latest iterations of language, though expressed differently: we speak of how an event \u201cwent down,\u201d we wait and see \u201chow things fall out\u201d and hope they \u201cfall into place.\u201d&nbsp; Span. <em>c\u00f3mo caen las fichas <\/em>is something like \u201chow the dice fall.\u201d We \u201cfall in\u201d with friends, until we have a \u201cfalling out.\u201d \u201cFall in\u201d also means the incorporation of an individual or group, &nbsp;such as soldiers, into a march, drill, or parade.<\/p>\n<p>One \u201cfalls for\u201d a trick; Spanish has <em>caer en la trampa<\/em>, \u201cto fall into a trap.\u201d Spanish, picturesquely, has <em>caer como un chorlito<\/em>, literally \u201cto fall like a little bird.\u201d But on figuring something out, on realizing the truth, <em>uno cae en la cuenta<\/em>\u2014something like \u201cto fall into awareness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Between entering the world at birth and our final fall (when one \u201cdrops dead,\u201d <em>cae muerto<\/em>), the most dramatic event in most of our lives is that moment when we \u201cfall in love\u201d (Sp. <em>enamorarse<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>Once again we are face to face with the mysterious quality of the verb \u201cto fall,\u201d <em>caer<\/em>: it seems to name a voluntary action (like \u201cto walk,\u201d \u201cto cook\u201d), yet it really expresses the operation on a body of an exterior force\u2014love, death, gravity.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to fathom the importance of this notion to language and culture. In the Christian worldview, the original act of disobedience causes \u201cthe Fall\u201d (<em>la Ca\u00edda<\/em>) of Humanity into a state of sinfulness.
