Clearly it meant \u201cLatinos for Trump\u201d but it didn\u2019t say that: Spanish <em>para<\/em> can mean \u201cfor\u201d but it\u2019s not the same \u201cfor\u201d used to indicate support of a candidate. (An even more unfortunate version of the sign, also seen at the convention, was&nbsp;<em>&nbsp;\u201cHispanics&nbsp;para Trump\u201d&nbsp;<\/em>which didn\u2019t even&nbsp;use the&nbsp;Spanish word for&nbsp;\u201cHispanics\u201d:&nbsp;<em>hispanos<\/em>.)<\/p>\n<div data-shortcode=\"caption\" id=\"attachment_1565\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1565\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-1565 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/interfluency.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/07\/latinos-hispanics-para-trump.jpg?w=300&amp;h=135\" alt=\"Latinos-Hispanics para Trump\" width=\"300\" height=\"135\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-1565\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Scenes from the Republican Convention held in Cleveland, Jul. 18-21, 2016.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The preposition <em>para<\/em> mainly means \u201cfor the purpose of, in order to, to be used by.\u201d <em>Papel para fotocopiadora<\/em>, \u201cpaper for &nbsp;photocopier, photocopy paper\u201d; <em>vegetales para ensaladas<\/em>, \u201cvegetables for salads, salad greens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cLatinos para Trump\u201d<\/em> says something like \u201cLatinos to be used by Trump.\u201d It should read: <em>Latinos por <\/em>(or <em>con<\/em>) <em>Trump.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(We\u2019ll revisit <em>por<\/em>\/<em>para <\/em>again in the near future.)<\/p>\n<p>The mistranslation unintentionally said some other things, too: \u201cThis sign was not made by a Latino\u201d or (more accurately) \u201cwas not created by a native Spanish speaker.\u201d Even worse: \u201cWe don\u2019t care about Latinos, we just want their votes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Poor translation is poison: it undermines your message; makes you look foolish; and sends adverse signals\u2014the worst being, \u201cWe don\u2019t care enough to do this right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every time an organization assigns a translation to some employee who happens to (it is believed) \u201cspeak Spanish,\u201d&nbsp;the result will almost certainly be unfortunate\u2014and maybe deadly: imagine the mistranslation of a safety warning!<\/p>\n<p>Few of us would let our brother-in-law \u201cwho fools around with electrical stuff\u201d do the wiring of our house. Or have the neighbor who once took a CPR course operate on our liver. But, in essence, that\u2019s what\u2019s routinely done with translation (and its spoken cousin, interpreting).
