Usually it takes growing up, living, taking our share of hard knocks, and then a few years of doing that pretty tough job he did\u2026 to open our eyes. Happy Fathers Day to all, and loving thanks to our own, RIP.)<\/p>\n<p>Sundays too my father got up early<br \/>\nand put his clothes on in the blueblack cold,<br \/>\nthen with cracked hands that ached <span class=\"text_exposed_show\"><br \/>\nfrom labor in the weekday weather made<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"text_exposed_show\">banked fires blaze. No one ever thanked him.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"text_exposed_show\">\n<p>I\u2019d wake and hear the cold splintering, breaking.<br \/>\nWhen the rooms were warm, he\u2019d call,<br \/>\nand slowly I would rise and dress,<br \/>\nfearing the chronic angers of that house,<\/p>\n<p>Speaking indifferently to him,<br \/>\nwho had driven out the cold<br \/>\nand polished my good shoes as well.<br \/>\nWhat did I know, what did I know<br \/>\nof love\u2019s austere and lonely offices?<\/p>\n<p>\u2013Robert Hayden (1913-1980) \u201cThose Winter Sundays\u201d.<br \/>\nWith thanks to Garrison Keillor for introducing us to this poem one day, many years ago, on his radio feature, Writer\u2019s Almanac.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Enlace para espa\u00f1ol\/Link here for Spanish My father loved this self-portrait of Rembrandt, and for me it has become almost a portrait of him.
