An example: William Henry Harrison\u2019s 1840 campaign, which made much use of log-cabin imagery.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The main sense of this colloquial word is \u201cpeople.\u201d But unlike the latter, \u201cfolks\u201d connotes familiarity, warmth, even intimacy. \u201cWhat can I bring you folks to drink?\u201d is what a waiter might say trying to be friendly and casual instead of formal.<\/p>\n<p>Politicians adore saying \u201cfolks\u201d as it makes them sound humble and approachable\u2014at least they think it does. \u201cI want to thank the good folks of this state for sending me to Congress\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not only do they like to call the people, voters, and taxpayers \u201cfolks\u201d\u2014they love to apply it to themselves. \u201cI\u2019m just folks\u201d (the deep-fried Southernism is: \u201cjes\u2019 folks\u201d) is a verbal version of bluejeans and &nbsp;lumberjack shirt. Could be the richer the candidate, the more they like saying \u201cfolks\u201d\u2014or feel they need to!<\/p>\n<p>It can also be an informal term for \u201cparents\u201d: \u201cI really miss my folks back home.\u201d Not quite as common is the broader sense of \u201crelatives\u201d (old-fashioned \u201crelations\u201d or colloquial \u201ckin\u201d or \u201ckinfolk\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>As \u201cordinary people,\u201d \u201cfolks\u201d can be translated by Spanish <em>el pueblo.<\/em> As a form of address, two possibilities are <em>mi gente<\/em> or <em>amigos<\/em>; a particularly Mexican variant would be&nbsp;<em>mi raza&nbsp;<\/em>or&nbsp;<em>mi racita<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not to be confused with the singular \u201cfolk,\u201d meaning \u201cthe (ordinary) people\u201d or \u201ca people,\u201d as with an ethnic group. (This is where the term \u201cfolklore\u201d came from.)<\/p>\n<p>The friendly aura of \u201cfolks\u201d can also be weirdly out of place, as when Pres. G.W. Bush spoke of \u201cthe folks responsible for 9-11\u201d or when Pres. Obama said, \u201cWe\u2019ve tortured some folks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a brilliant dissection of the way so many of our politicans try to be \u201cjust folks,\u201d give a listen to the late, great country singer Cal Smith performing Sonny Throckmorton\u2019s&nbsp;song, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bfvz7kteHTY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cI\u2019m Just A Farmer\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a1Buenas palabras!
