{"id":683,"date":"2016-03-26T14:04:59","date_gmt":"2016-03-26T19:04:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/interfluency.com\/?p=683"},"modified":"2021-02-21T17:26:06","modified_gmt":"2021-02-21T23:26:06","slug":"lunary-language-and-lore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/interfluency.com\/en\/2016\/03\/26\/lunary-language-and-lore\/","title":{"rendered":"Lunary language and lore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/interfluency.wordpress.com\/2016\/03\/26\/la-luna-y-la-lengua\/\">Enlace para espa\u00f1ol\/Link for Spanish<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dear reader,<\/p>\n<p>This past week brought not only a full moon (Span. <em>luna llena<\/em>, or, in a graceful Latin form, <em>plenilunio<\/em>), but also a penumbral lunar eclipse. &nbsp;And as far removed as most of us city folk are from the country and the spell the night sky used to cast on humanity, our companion orb has not lost the power to stun us with its beauty.<\/p>\n<p>Human language testifies to&nbsp;the profound imprint that Earth\u2019s satellite has made on human consciousness. We\u2019ll look very briefly at some of that testimony, mainly in English and Spanish.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1191 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/interfluency.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/03\/penumbral-lunar-eclipse-march-2016.jpg?w=630\" alt=\"penumbral lunar eclipse march 2016\">The odd chance that Sun (<em>Sol<\/em>)&nbsp;and Moon (<em>Luna<\/em>) appear the same size in the earthly sky, has surely reinforced human cultures\u2019 seeing them as a pair representing male\/female, gold\/silver, night\/day.&nbsp; The moon-female tie runs deep: the lunar phases find an echo in woman\u2019s menstrual cycle.<\/p>\n<p>The moon has its day: Engl. \u201cMonday\u201d (Ger. <em>Montag, <\/em>Dan. <em>mandag<\/em>), Span. <em>lunes<\/em> (Fr. <em>lundi,<\/em> It. <em>luned<\/em><em>\u00ec<\/em>).&nbsp; It also gives us \u201cmonth\u201d; Span. <em>mes<\/em> is from Lat. <em>&nbsp;mensis<\/em>, a root visible in words like \u201cbi-mensual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another link: moon and madness, yields&nbsp; Engl. \u201clunatic\u201d and Span. <em>Lun<\/em><em>\u00e1<\/em><em>tico.&nbsp; <\/em>But &nbsp;English informalizes it with \u201clooney\u201d and \u201clooney tunes\u201d (from the old cartoon series); \u201clooney bin\u201d is a mental hospital.<\/p>\n<p>English also uses \u201cmoon\u201d for \u201cto languish sadly\u201d (as one pining for a lost or unrequited love), which is a slightly archaic usage, and \u201cto show one\u2019s bared buttocks,\u201d which isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Sp. <em>lunar<\/em> (loo-NAR) is also \u201cbirthmark,\u201d once thought caused by the Moon\u2019s influence, or \u201cpolka dot\u201d on clothing. Spanish calls a landing on the Moon an <em>alunizaje<\/em> (by analogy to <em>aterrizaje<\/em> on Earth).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoonlight\u201d (Sp. <em>claro de luna<\/em>, Fr. <em>claire de lune<\/em>) has a power over young lovers, long understood (and abetted) by poets and songwriters.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel Johnson\u2019s Sermon XII movingly uses the lovely, archaic word \u201csublunary\u201d for \u201cearthly\u201d\u2014urging his listeners \u201cto bid farewell to sublunary vanities\u201d and instead \u201cwith pure heart and steady faith to \u2018fear God and keep his commandments.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a1Buenas palabras!&nbsp;<\/em>Good words!<\/p>\n<p>Pablo<\/p>\n<p><em>An earlier version of this essay originally appeared in the Nov. 27-Dec. 3, 2015 edition of<\/em>&nbsp;La Prensa <em>Latina (Memphis, Tennessee) as number 158 in the weekly bilingual column,&nbsp;<\/em><em>\u201cMisterios y Engimas de la Traducci\u00f3n\/Mysteries and Enigmas of Translation\u201d. &nbsp;Pablo Juli\u00e1n Davis, PhD, CT is an ATA (Aamerican Translators Association) Certified Translator, Engl&gt;Span; a Tennessee State Courts Certified Interpreter, Engl&lt;&gt;Span; and an innovative trainer in the fields of translation, interpreting, and intercultural competency, with over 25 years experience.
