To name a few: butterflies, roses, kites, rainbows.<\/p>\n<div data-shortcode=\"caption\" id=\"attachment_1052\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/interfluency.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/02\/vaquita-de-san-antonio.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1052\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1052\" src=\"https:\/\/interfluency.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/02\/vaquita-de-san-antonio.jpg?w=630\" alt=\"Este diminuto insecto, \u00bfpuede que sea amado por todas las culturas humanas?\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-1052\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Is it possible that this little insect is loved by all human cultures?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>A small, flying insect, usually red and spotted\u2014English \u201cladybug,\u201d Spanish <em>mariquita<\/em> (little Mary), <em>vaquita de San Antonio<\/em> (St. Anthony\u2019s little cow), and other names\u2014also has a strong claim on membership in this select group.<\/p>\n<p>The English and Spanish names are subtly linked: the \u201clady\u201d in \u201cladybug\u201d seems to refer to the Virgin Mary.<\/p>\n<p>Some others: French <em>la b\u00eate \u00e0 bon Dieu<\/em> (the good Lord\u2019s bug), Russian <em>bozha kapovka<\/em> (God\u2019s little cow), Dutch <em>lieveheerbeestje<\/em> (the dear Lord\u2019s little animal), Yiddish <em>moyshe rabbeynus ferdele<\/em> (or) <em>kiyele <\/em>(Moses\u2019s little horse, or little cow).<\/p>\n<p>Why this affection so strong it often crosses into the sacred? The ladybug\u2019s pretty colors are not unlike a butterfly\u2019s; the spots remind us of cows.&nbsp; Ladybugs readily rest or walk on a human hand.&nbsp; And <em>mariquita,<\/em> a farmer\u2019s friend, eats such agricultural pests as the aphid.<\/p>\n<p>Some religious traditions, like Judaism, shrink from naming the Deity, so the prophet Moses is used instead. Spanish also steers clear of God in naming this insect, displacing to the Virgin or St. Anthony.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the ladybug is one of those utterly joyous things whose contemplation once moved Robert Louis Stevenson to write: <em>The world is so full of a number of things\/I\u2019m sure we should all be as happy as kings.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u00a1Buenas palabras\/Good words!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Pablo<\/p>\n<p><em>Pablo Juli\u00e1n Davis, PhD, CT is a Certified Translator (ATA\/American Translators Association) eng&gt;spa and a Certified Interpreter (Tennessee State Courts)&nbsp;eng&lt;&gt;spa, as well as a recognized trainer in the fields of translation, interpreting, and cultural competence.
