Spanish uses a Latin root for many of these objects and concepts, one related to the legal term \u201ctort.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>What binds them together is the notion of twisting. \u201cWrong\u201d comes to English on a Scandinavian route from a Proto-Germanic (the conjectured ancestor tongue of the family that includes German, Dutch, Danish, English, and others) root, <em>*wrang-<\/em> and long before that from Proto-Indo-European <em>*wrengh- <\/em>(to turn).<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s wrong, then, is twisted.&nbsp; Its opposite, \u201cright,\u201d comes from Latin <em>rectus <\/em>(straight). Colloquiallisms confirm the pair: a criminally dishonest person is \u201ccrooked,\u201d a \u201ccrook,\u201d while a \u201cstraight arrow\u201d is honest and truthful speech is \u201cstraight up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A moral distinction, expressed aesthetically and geometrically.<\/p>\n<p>Some descendants of <em>wr-<\/em>: \u201cwrist\u201d a body part that twists, \u201cwrench\u201d a tool for twisting, \u201cwrinkle\u201d twisted skin, \u201cwry\u201d mouth twisted in a half-smile; \u201cwring\u201d to squeeze by twisting; \u201cwrithe\u201d to twist and turn in pain.<\/p>\n<p>Spanish and its Romance relatives tend to express this sense through Latin roots for turning and twisting.&nbsp; Spanish <em>tuerto<\/em> means \u201cone-eyed,\u201d French <em>tort<\/em> gave us the word for a civil wrong, The spinning lathe is Spanish <em>torno. <\/em>The root in <em>distorsi\u00f3n<\/em> is easily spotted\u2014Latin <em>tortus<\/em> has influenced English too. \u201cTorque\u201d is an engine\u2019s rotating force.<\/p>\n<p>The ghastliest descendant of this family names the unspeakable act of inflicting physical or mental pain on someone who is completely under one\u2019s power: the sadly not-extinct \u201ctorture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Copyright \u00a92014 by Pablo J.
