All over the US on a Friday like today, millions of people are wishing co-workers a good weekend and saying \u201cSee\u00a0you Monday.\u201d\u00a0What if you wanted to say it\u00a0to a co-worker from Mexico, Colombia, or Puerto Rico\u2014in Spanish?\u00a0 Translating directly from English, you might say, \u201cNos vemos el lunes\u201d (literally: We\u2019ll see each other on Monday)\u00a0or perhaps, a little more freely, \u201cHasta el lunes\u201d (Until Monday).<\/p>\n

But to most Spanish speakers, those phrases will sound a little threadbare.\u00a0 Something is missing\u2026 But what?<\/p>\n

Just three little words:\u00a0 \u201cSi Dios quiere.\u201d\u00a0 This is\u00a0how a large proportion of Spanish speakers would utter the common end-of-workweek farewell: \u201cHasta el lunes, si Dios quiere.\u201d\u00a0 Si Dios quiere: If God so wishes, or, in more idiomatic English, God willing.<\/p>\n

So why is this phrase so important?\u00a0 Is Latin American and Spanish culture so much more deeply religious than that of the United States?\u00a0Do most Spanish speakers live in constant fear of accident and illness? Or could it be that the phrase isn\u2019t\u00a0really that important? Perhaps it\u2019s just a little remnant, a cultural tic whose meaning is lost. Perhaps it\u2019s like saying \u201cGod bless you\u201d when someone sneezes,\u00a0a gesture without real import.<\/p>\n

I suggest that it\u2019s more than that\u2026 quite a bit more.\u00a0 The key lies in the discomfort that most native Spanish speakers tend to feel when they hear the phrase uttered\u00a0without<\/em>\u00a0those three little words. It\u2019s hard to put that discomfort into words: perhaps it\u2019s that the phrase\u00a0sounds too self-assured, too smug\u2026 too proud. Overconfident. Perhaps even a little impious, a little blasphemous.\u00a0Who knows what Monday will bring?\u00a0Who knows what the future has in store? Keep in mind: this is almost never a conscious thought.\u00a0 Rather, it\u2019s a deeply held, almost entirely unconscious standpoint towards life.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0close relative of this phenomenon is found in the common conversational exchange of inquiring after one another\u2019s well-being.\u00a0 \u201c\u00bfC\u00f3mo est\u00e1s?\u201d (How are you?) is most frequently answered\u00a0not simply with \u201cBien\u201d (Fine) or \u201cBien, gracias\u201d (Fine, thanks), or even \u201cBien, gracias \u00bfy t\u00fa?\u201d (Fine, thanks, and you?)\u2014but, rather, \u201cBien, gracias a Dios\u201d (literally: Fine, thank God).<\/p>\n

These phrases wouldn\u2019t sound natural\u00a0in most everyday English-language contexts.\u00a0\u00a0In certain settings it might, such as a religious community.\u00a0 There, something like, \u201cFine, praise God!\u201d is not unusual.\u00a0 If we think of older generations\u2014perhaps our grandparents\u2019 generation, or that of their parents\u2014we may also remember hearing phrases like this in English. In rural and small-town settings,\u00a0folk(sy) expressions like, \u201cLord willing and the creek don\u2019t rise\u201d are still fairly unremarkable.<\/p>\n

In ordinary, spoken English, though, responding\u00a0to \u201cHow are you?\u201d with \u201cFine, thank God!\u201d makes the asker wonder if the other person has just survived\u00a0an auto accident, a serious illness, or some other ordeal.\u00a0Try the thought experiment yourself: or better yet, do an actual social experiment and reply, \u201cFine, thank God!\u201d to the next person who asks how you are doing.\u00a0Watch that person\u2019s face and you\u2019ll very likely see surprise or puzzlement.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, these three little words (\u201cSi Dios quiere\u201d and \u201cGracias a Dios\u201d) suggest a lot about what it\u2019s like to live in the culture that Spanish language expresses.\u00a0 The\u00a0feelings about the world, and the premises underlying those feelings, are\u00a0different.\u00a0 To those who have grown up bilingual, and carry in their bones the sensation of moving back and forth across cultural boundaries\u2014what I call\u00a0Interfluency<\/a>, the name of my translation and cultural-training company\u2014there are subtly, but unmistakably, different ways of being alive in the world\u00a0on one or the other side of the boundary.<\/p>\n

In English, particularly US English, there is a confident, even bold attitude towards the future and an expectation of success. In Spanish, by contrast, there is at least a gesture of humility, a small linguistic ceremony of respect in the face of life and its uncertainties.\u00a0 If this attitude can be called religious, it certainly does not belong to any one church or denomination.\u00a0 \u201cGod\u201d may be thought of as the deity or simply as a way of talking about the unknowable.<\/p>\n

For those interested in exploring these issues, I recommend\u00a0Javier Villatoro\u2019s lovely and perceptive essay<\/a>, \u201cDios mediante: la percepci\u00f3n cultural del futuro en la lengua espa\u00f1ola\u201d\u2014of which I only became aware as I was\u00a0finishing these lines.<\/p>\n

More broadly, I would point readers to the wisdom in the Spanish master Miguel de Unamuno, and particularly in his\u00a0Tragic Sense of Life<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(El sentimiento tr\u00e1gico de la vida,<\/em>\u00a0first published in English translation in 1921).\u00a0<\/em>For me, \u201cSi Dios quiere\u201d has something to do with the tragic sense\u2014tragic not in any morbid or pessimistic way, but rather in a recognition of life\u2019s uncertainties and human limitations.<\/p>\n

Those uncertainties, those limitations somehow find little place in contemporary US English with its sleek surfaces and aerodynamic speed. But their recognition still breathes in the very pulse of Spanish, and to have grown up in\u00a0that language\u00a0is to feel that recognition.<\/p>\n

\u201cSi Dios quiere\u201d\u2014like the largely pass\u00e9 English\u00a0God willing<\/em>, the Portuguese (Spanish\u2019s fraternal twin)\u00a0Se Deus quiser,<\/em>\u00a0the Arabic\u00a0Inshallah<\/em>\u00a0(whose direct descendant, \u201cojal\u00e1\u201d is still deeply entrenched in contemporary Spanish), the Hebrew and Yiddish\u00a0Halevai\u2014<\/em>can be seen, then, as bearing witness to a deeply rooted view of life.<\/p>\n

That it\u2019s more than a mere verbal formula, more than an empty gesture, is borne out by the unease most people of Latin American or Iberian\u00a0birth or origins feel at the bare brashness of an unqualified \u201cSee you Monday!\u201d<\/p>\n
